The Ultimate Ski Trip Packing Guide

Imagine this…

It’s 2021 and you’re ready to get the fuck out of your house and social distance outside on the slopes–but you’ve been stuck inside wearing nothing but sweat pants and robes for the last 12 months. You forgot what it’s like to travel or even leave your couch for that matter. How the hell will you pack for a ski trip? Don’t worry babe, I got you!

By no means am I the queen of cold weather. I’ve lived in the South my entire life, some of that time being in Florida–so I haven’t lived in extremely cold conditions but I have experienced it a time or two. Going on a ski trip can be expensive and daunting, but I’m here to make your life just a litttttle bit easier. Whether you’re headed out for a week-long trip or just a short getaway, these ski trip essentials will keep you warm and prepared for all the conditions.

Here is my Ultimate Ski Trip Packing Guide (with side notes)

Ski/Snowboard Clothes & Accessories

  • Neck Gaiter // trust me when I first heard this term I was confused too–just think of it as a neck condom to keep you warm while skiing/snowboarding
  • Ski Goggles // yes you really need these
  • Ski Pants, Ski Suit, Ski Bibs // whichever you prefer! Personally, I love ski bibs (overalls) but choose what best suits your needs. Just remember if you plan on actually skiing and not just looking cute, you WILL need warm, comfortable, and waterproof pants.
  •  Ski Jacket // You don’t need to go all out, just make sure it’s also waterproof!
  • Ski Socks // These will either make or break you. Don’t settle for a pack of ankle socks, you’ll be miserable. Instead, try a wool blend that goes above the ankle. These will keep you feeling warmer and more comfortable (plus your stinky feet won’t smell as bad!)
  • Ski Gloves
  • Snow Boots // If it’s icy or happens to snow on your trip, you don’t want to be sliding around with no grip. Find yourself a pair of warm snow boots that keep your feet dry + have a good grip.

Ski Trip Cold Weather Clothes & Accessories

  • Base Layers // Thermals are where it’s at! These should be skin tight to help keep warmth in but you can also wear some tights under your leggings/base layer
  • Mid Layers // Think of breathable fleece pullovers or something of the sort
  • Down Jacket  // I have a “packable” down jacket that can roll up into a tiny ball but also keeps me extremely warm! Best of both worlds.
  • Sweaters & Turtle Necks // WARM WARM WARM ONES!
  • Cozy Socks // for lounging around the house
  • T-Shirts // IDC how cold it might be outside, bring 1-2 t-shirts to lounge in…cold outside means blazing hot inside trying to stay warm
  • Jeggings, Leggings & Yoga Pants // The best part about a ski trip is most people choose comfort over fashion so pack as many as you need! I prefer fleece-lined leggings for extra warmth.
  • Jeans // if you’re into that. I personally hate jeans but do you boo!
  • Hats, Beanies, Ear Muffs // Did you know that around 45% of body heat is lost through the head and neck? Well, now you do. Pick the option(s) that best suit you!
  • Tech Gloves // yes another pair of gloves where you can ALSO use your phone without one hand getting cold
  • Undergarments // Thermal underwear, sports bras, regular bras–whatever you prefer! Go commando if you want, just know your parts will probably be cold.
  • Pajamas
  • Bathing Suit // even in freezing cold temperatures, bring one! A dip in the hot tub or hot spring will do wonders for an achy body.
  • Flip Flops // for after the hot tub/hot spring or we can get technical and you can bring some show-stopping Crocs 😂
  • Sunglasses // to protect you from the sun and the haters
  • Blanket Scarf // I’m a huge fan of versatile items. This can serve as a blanket in the car + on a plane, as a scarf, as a towel if needed + so much more. Get you one!
  • Face Mask // due to COVID restrictions in a lot of areas + helps keep your face warm
  • Casual Shoes // again, I personally wear my snow boots everywhere but if you want something less bulky, pack a pair of casual booties/boots or whatever your heart desires
  • Slippers // Even better if you decide to be versatile and find slipper moccasins or slipper socks!

Toiletries

  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Moisturizer for face and body // preferably something thick and long-lasting (the cold does nothing for your skin)
  • Feminine Hygiene products
  • Dry Shampoo // for that helmet hair
  • Brush / Comb
  • Hairstyling Tools
  • Hair accessories // braids are perfect to keep your hair from flying around
  • Loofah
  • Makeup
  • Makeup Brushes
  • Makeup Remover / Wipes
  • Razor(s) & Shaving Products
  • Shampoo & Conditioner
  • Body wash/ Gel
  • Deodorant
  • Nighttime Routine Products // again, pack on the moisturizer
  • Sanitizing Wipes
  • Tissues // snot icicles are no fun
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • SPF Lip Balm
  • SPF Sunscreen // yes even when it’s not bright and sunny out
  • Contact Lenses & Solution or Glasses & Case

Fuel For Your Body (Snacks) & Other Useful Accessories For Your Ski Trip

  • Beef Jerky // great source of protein
  • Liquid IV // keeps you hydrated and energized depending on which one you get
  • Granola & Protein Bars
  • Chocolate // helps with altitude sickness
  • Trail Mix
  • Vitamin C // the packets or little chewables will do! This helps boost your immunity in cold temps.
  • Energy Chews OR Energy Drink Mixes
  • Hand Warmers // I have these rechargeable ones and they are the best!
  • Massager // can be electric or just a mini one, either way, your body will thank you after a long day on the slopes
  • Reusable Water Bottle OR Camelback// makes it easy to stay hydrated on the slopes! If you go for a reusable water bottle, try a collapsible one to save space!
  • Small Backpack // to pack some snacks/ lip balm etc for your long day
  • External Charger // cold weather can make your battery die at record speeds…don’t ask me why and don’t get stranded.
  • Packing Cubes // If there is anything you get on this list–it’s packing cubes!! They help organize and compress all of your stuff AND you can use them for every single trip (I don’t go anywhere without them!

Medical

  • Painkillers + Pain Relievers // one word–pain. If you aren’t hitting the slopes every weekend, I guarantee your body will be sore. Bring them, take them, don’t feel guilty about it.
  • Prescription Medicine // if you have any
  • Compeed Bandages // pain relief for blisters, cracked heels, etc
  • Tiger Balm / CBD Salve // for an achy body
  • Sleeping Medicine
  • Tums
  • Cough Drops
  • Altitude Sickness Medicine // chat with your doctor (beforehand) if you’re prone to altitude sickness and see what they can do to help
  • First Aid Kit // add in some bandages, alcohol wipes, gauze, etc

Entertainment & Technology

  • Camera & Charger
  • Laptop & Charger
  • Ipad // if you have one (great for plane entertainment too)
  • Phone & Charger
  • Drone & Charger // those birds eye snow shots are the best!
  • Deck of cards // for after the slopes fun
  • Go Pro & Mounts
  • Tripod // for getting those action shots

As for skis, poles, boots, and helmets–we have always rented these! Yes, it can get very expensive so it’s important to save money where you can. I’ve added some links to items BUT if this is a one-off trip, don’t go balls to the wall buying everything. My advice? Ask some friends to borrow items you might need, shop sales online and even go to second-hand stores to scope out some clothing/accessories. I do almost all of my shopping at second-hand stores because I care about the Earth (and because I get tired of my clothes quickly).

I usually find some great stuff at:

Yes it will take some time and some digging to find great pieces for your ski trip, but I LOVE a good deal and you will have more money to spend on important things (like food and alcohol 😉) Hopefully this post gave you some inspiration for your next ski trip and some courage to get out there on the slopes! Let me know if I forgot anything, until next time…
