CBD has been sweeping the health and wellness world lately–but slowly trickling into the day to day norm. It’s all for good reason too considering some scientific studies confirm that it may help treat a variety of ailments like chronic pain and anxiety.
Like many “up and coming” industries, there is a lot of gray area around CBD oils, CBD oil benefits, and its effects. For anyone who travels a lot like myself, I had to do some research and digging to find out the rules, regulations and how the hell to travel safely with it! But first off, a little back story on CBD.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant. When people hear marijuana, however, they freak the fuck out. Although marijuana is legal in some states, it’s not legal in all–but that’s where the good news comes in!
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis and causes the sensation of getting “high” that you usually feel with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. Meaning, you get all of the amazing qualities without feeling high. PLUS its 100% legal! #winwin
CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. Basically a magical elixir in a bottle.
Is it safe to fly with CBD?
Another gray area that’s in the process of getting ironed out. TSA use to say that all forms of THC and CBD were banned from flying, but as of March 2019, they updated their “What Can I Bring” page to reflect the new terms. It states that you can now possess “products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA.” To be honest, I’ve been flying with CBD oil, gummies, and creams for a while now, it’s all about what YOU are comfortable with.
What ways can you consume/ use CBD?
The best part about CBD is that it comes in many different shapes, sizes, and forms.
CBD Oil is the most concentrated form meaning the most powerful and potent. Since this is the purest form, you can place some under your tongue, in a capsule for swallowing and even in smoothies, baked goods, etc for a more subtle CBD oil effect. TSA can’t say no to some homemade brownies, right?
CBD Tinctures are similar to the oil but usually less concentrated. Tinctures come in the form of a dropper bottle, making it easy to place some under your tongue or in your coffee on the go. Another discreet way of taking it while traveling.
CBD Gummies are probably my favorite way of ingestion–simply because I LOVE sweets! Taking 2 of these in the morning is as simple as taking your daily vitamins.
CBD Topicals are great for application directly to the skin.
CBD Vaporizing can allow for the effects to be felt almost immediately without all the harmful bullshit that comes with smoking a cigarette. This fast-acting method can subside pain and inflammation.
Now that we got some rules and logistics out of the way– let’s talk about the many ways you can use CBD while traveling.
Combat Travel Anxiety
We all know that traveling is both a blessing and a curse. The days, weeks and even months leading up to a trip can cause serious stress, anxiety, and overwhelming feelings. The physical symptoms of anxiety stem from the natural way that humans respond to threats.
All of the “what if’s” start playing in your mind which get you all worked up–
- What if I lose my bag?
- What if I freak out on the plane?
- What if I can’t find my hotel?
- What if my credit card doesn’t work?
The list is endless, but being able to identify the source of your anxiety and taking necessary steps to avoid it altogether is key. That’s where CBD comes into play. CBD oil can naturally slow this mental response which brings a calm and relaxed feeling to your mind and body. Mix that with some in-depth pre-planning and you got yourself an antidote to a stress-free vacation!
To relieve sore/achy muscles after a long few days of exploring
While oils and tinctures are becoming increasingly popular, you don’t have to ingest cannabidiol to get the most out of its pain-relieving effects.
Imagine this: You’re in a new place, a new destination and you probably plan on exploring…a lot. 5 days of hiking, walking, strolling through the streets or mountains of ANY place can take a toll on your body. After a full few days, you’re exhausted and so is your muscles.
Instead of taking a dropper of it, the topical solutions are there to pinpoint your aches and pains and get rid of them fast. Studies show that using a CBD topicals right on the affected area is not just effective, but powerful.
My favorite CBD product to help with aches and pains: CBD Cream with Capsaicin. The capsaicin gives a warming sensation and almost instantly relieves the soreness!
Traveling with anxious pets
Our furry best friends need to feel the love too! Even though you might be excited to go on vacation–that doesn’t always mean your four-legged friends are. This anxiousness can be caused by either situational instances like fireworks, thunderstorms, and travel. OR by behavioral like separation anxiety or anxiety in general.
Does your dog start to pant excessively or try to roam around the car in a frenzy? Maybe they start showing aggression towards new people and peeing in places despite being house trained. These are all signs of a stressed-out, anxious pup who just needs a little help calming down. You can opt for using the oil–or my favorite thing to use is the treats!
Favorite CBD pet treats: Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Motion sickness can hit at any time. Ever been a flight where the couple in front of you seemed to boycott deodorant? Maybe you’ve been in a foreign country cramped in the back of a taxi where the driver thinks he’s in Grand Theft Auto?
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness and everything in between is a result of motion sickness. Motion sickness is defined as a disorder of the sense of balance and equilibrium–but again, CBD is here to save the day! People who might usually turn to pharmaceutical drugs have been shifting their attention to more natural products like CBD.
Traveling and motion sickness do NOT work well together. Anywhere you go you might have to use a mode of transportation (i.e. the subway, an Uber, the bus, a train, a plane, a scooter etc).
My favorite CBD product for motion sickness: Peppermint CBD Isolate
Dealing with your Time of Month
Mother Nature might decide to show up unexpected during your lavish vacation with a daunting gift…your period. No matter how much you might try to fight it or “plan” around it, shit happens.
To me, there is nothing worse than trying to enjoy yourself on a well-deserved trip when all of a sudden PMS hits you like a ton of bricks.

Between the painful cramps, bloating, fatigue, and mood swings–I almost want to curl up in a little ball and cry. Instead of allowing this to ruin your vacay, allow CBD to rescue you!
There are two ways I suggest fighting the ovary demons. First would be to start taking the capsules well before your trip. Sometimes your body needs to get accustomed to the capsules for it to feel the effects so start early! The other option is to use the salve or topical cream on your lower abdomen. This can help alleviate period cramps so you don’t turn into the Hulk when someone tries to talk to you 🙂
